Top Five Marvel Comics

Home / Top Five Marvel Comics - August 7, 2017 , by doontoon

This list, based on the current market values for both raw and graded copies, highlights today’s most valuable 100 comic book variants. Excluded from this list are high ratio variants (1:500, 1:1000, etc.), price, error and recalled “variants”. Why exclude these? High ratio variants have a high initial purchase price. Most of these (while still expensive) have all for the most part decreased in value since their initial release. For example: STAR WARS: VADER DOWN #1 1:4999 was at the top of this list. With this book hitting heights of $7K, its recent sale of $959 isn’t a true representative of this list’s intentions. Error/recalled variants (which I LOVE and should have its own list) are oddities and not intended as a “variant”.

Amazing Spider-Man #667 Variant

#1 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #667 DELL’OTTO 1:100 VARIANT (MARVEL 2011)

eBay NM Avg raw: $2,000 (*update* member JDR found a more recent raw sale at $2,500 on 3/25/16.  So, still #1.  It just gives Siege a little more work to do.  Thanks JDR!)

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $4,000

The king of “normal” ratio incentive variants. This incredibly hard to find variant is all thanks to it being a 1:100 variant during Spidey’s lowest sales ever in 2011. A book like this doesn’t get easier to find as time passes. The folks paying these prices are most likely keeping these in their collection.

siege-3-var

#2 – SIEGE #3 DEADPOOL CAMPBELL VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,913

eBay Graded Sale: 9.4: $1,650

When I started making this list, the last sale was in May at $900. Well, a recent sale on 8/21 blew that out of the water at close to $2K, almost overtaking the King Spidey #667. To get this variant, retailers had to send into Marvel 50 unsold copies of DC’s Blackest Night crossover to get 1 copy of this variant. Not many did. Being a scarce Deadpool Campbell variant (rumored to be around 400 copies), it can easily command a high price for quite some time.

Walking Dead #100 Lucille Ruby

#3 – WALKING DEAD #100 LUCILLE RUBY VARIANT (IMAGE 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,675

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $2,400

This book is SO close to overtaking WD #1 as the most expensive book in the series. This was a Skybound Black Friday to Cyber Monday limited to 250 exclusive in 2012. With so few copies, fans will want one for their collections and they just won’t show up. And seeing how there haven’t been any copies lately, this appears to have already happened.

Wolverine1Deadpool

#4 – WOLVERINE #1 CAMPBELL “DEADPOOL” VARIANT (MARVEL 2010)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,425

eBay Graded Sale: 9.6: $1,775

Again, when I started this list the most recent sale was $810. Now, on 8/14 this saw a NM copy sell for $1,425. Like Siege, to get 1 copy of this variant, retailers had to send in 50 covers from a specific list. It’s arguably rarer than Siege and black covers are brutal to get in high grade. Another rumored print run of 450 copies, this variant will never stop climbing this list and I guarantee it will eventually be #1.

Amazing_Spider-Man_Vol_1_678_Venom_Variant

#5 – AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #678 QUINONES MARY JANE VENOM 1:50 VARIANT (MARVEL 2012)

eBay NM Avg raw: $1,300

eBay Graded Sale: 9.8: $3,275

Easily the most coveted Spider-Man variant. This cover is so hard to find and so valuable that it has spiked over every other “2012 Venom Variant Month ” book (most make an appearance on this list). The raw value for this has somewhat stabilized after making big jumps for the past few years. However, high grade 9.8 copies still sell for a premium.
